Brave New World Ch 9, 10

Allusions
Her eyes, Her hair, Her cheek, Her gait, Her voice- Romeo and Juliet
My Father- God
Irony she wouldn't have cared what John did because she was brain washed to think that its ok.

Summary
Bernard, Lenina, John, and Linda now are all preparing to go back to London. Bernard receives permission to take the two (savages) back to London. Upon taking a large amount of Soma Lenina passes out. John breaks into her room and started going through her suitcase. John soon starts going through Lenina's stuff sniffing and admiring everything in it. After that he quotes Shakes spear about how beautiful Lenina is by referencing Romeo and Juliet. Later he realizes that what he's doing is wrong and decides to leave before she wakes up. He leaves when he hears the sound of a helicopter approaching and decides to meet Bernard outside, rather than have Bernard find him in Lenina's room.

Bernard heads to the factory and continues to work his job. The Director arrives and starts to confront and mock Bernard forcing the people in the factory to watch. Using the public as his court, the Director passes judgment on Bernard. Thinking that he should be sent to Iceland were he could mislead other people. The Director then asks Bernaard how he pleads to this possible banishment. Bernard replies by humiliating the director in front of everyone. Bernard walks to the door and introduces the Director to Linda, who tries to remind him of who she was. She pleads on and on about how they went on their trip and talks about her pregnancy. Upon hearing that she had a child from the director the crowd immediately becomes silent. The Director becomes pale and stiff as a ghost. Next to enter the building is John who repeatedly calls the Director "my father." That makes the crowd burst into laughter. The Director soon leaves fully humiliated while Bernard watches smiling at what he has accomplished.

Possible meaning
These chapters both provide more info and a change in the characters lives. With John we see a Native out cast shunned by both worlds finally being accepted by some people. He also appears to show signs that he is falling in love with Lenina by reciting a quote from Romeo and Juliet while she's asleep. He takes a great deal of interest in London and all its amenities by sniffing all of Lenina's personal belongings while looking around at everything. Bernard on the other hand is changing into a bit of a jerk by humiliating the director and seems to be taking less interest in Lenina.
I see an ironic connection almost in both characters. We see John who was treated as an out cast monster, then Bernard who is turning into one by ignoring the dystopia life and laws. John is becoming more and more "normal" human while Bernard is taking advantage of John, using him to get back at the Director and become the center of attention. Its almost like Bernard and John swap places.

Brave new world ch 8

Allusions
Bye Bye baby banting poem- its sang to John when he was younger
When he is drunk asleep, or in his rage quote- Hamlet

Summary
After a teary reunion Linda and John soon talk about how he was raised here. He describes not being able to read and Linda being a terrible mother. Every day they were visited by a masque man called Pope and John soon hated him more and more but wasn't capable of saying or showing it. Every time he visited it was to make Linda pass out from a drink that tasted terrible but had the same effects as Soma. After a few more years John came how to find three native women whipping and beating Linda for sleeping with there husbands. John pleaded them to stop, but was whipped as well. a few more months past and one day John was given a book to read, despite the fact that its based on her job and has really big words. he still learned to read them on his own. Soon he was able to read them though and a few years later he started reading an old shakespeare book. After the story Bernard soon started a plan and decided to bring John with him to the city.

Possible meaning
Despite John seeing his mother being defiled by Pope, the man he hated for a while. He didn't have the strength or the words to express his anger towards Pope. This references a connection to Hamlet. I think Hamlet/John didn't or couldn't end the life of Pope/the uncle because he at first didn't have words or the will to do it almost like he was denying that Pope wouldn't do sin to his mom. When seeing his night mare first hand he like Hamlet, went crazy and attacked him. But, he couldn't end Pope's life because he soon thought of him as a family member he loved to hate. In the end Pope helped John, when he taught him how to make clay art and wield a bow. This occurred when Pope saw John act more like a man.
It also looks relatable because while pope came for more than to give out masque, John didn't really lose it until he saw what he feared first hand. Like how Hamlet went insane as he heard that his uncle killed his father and soon married (relationship) his mother.
In my personal opinion, Lenina will become a problem later on in the story. Lenina is never going to change because of the way she and her caste are brain wash to have open relationships with any guy interested in them. However, John and Bernard have different views on life and love her so much that they may kill each other over her.

brave new world ch 7

Allusion
"Do you see that damned spot,"= Macbeth references blood to life
Jesus- christianity
pookong- rain god
John- John the baptist, also gives two quotes to blood and life from the bible.
Summary
Bernard and Lenina are now heading towards the village where they will be staying. As they walk towards the pueblo, Lenina started to get more and more uncomfortable at the sight of dirty black natives. She was also horrified when she saw a pregnant woman and the native elders. Bernard however, didn't seem to mind the native people. In fact, he shocks Lenina with the knowledge that he has about them. He agrees with there customs and beliefs. They finally make it to their small home. Lenina repeatedly reminds Bernard how much she prefers living in a hotel room with amenities to their current housing on the reservation.  She soon freaks out when she realizes she forgot her soma supply. When they look out the window they notice that a ceremony is starting to take place. They see a native boy being whipped by a man with a mask. He is whipped in front of what is a Christian cross and Pookong the native rain god. The  ceremony includes black snakes being held, danced with, and then sprinkled with grains of corn and water. After the ritual ends, Bernard and Lenina are visited by a slightly lighter native called John. He explains to them that he wishes he was the one whipped. It would be a sign that he has reached manhood and would almost be seen as an equal. John soon takes them to see his mother Linda who talks about how she was injured, healed, and left to live here. She was beaten by the native wives because she had slept with the men of their tribe. She didn't know or understand how life was different here. Its also revealed that the guy she had a baby by is actually the director. Bernard realizes that John is the director's son.

This shines a little more light on the distopia by introducing the savage's way of life and may spark conflict now that Bernard knows that the director got a Linda pregnant and didn't prevent the birth. Also revealed is the sign of racism since John is disliked by both the natives and the people from the city. The rituals of each group are similar but very different. The rain dance ritual of the native people is similar to the Soma chant that the people in London performed.

Brave new world ch 6 parts 1-3

Part 1
Bernard and Lenina start there date in Mexico by doing normal soma things that Lenina likes. Bernard insisted on doing more private things like taking walks and talking instead of woman's wrestling and and golf. As they got in the chopper Bernard starts acting weird and soon hovers over the ocean allowing the sunset to turn it black. Lenina didn't like this and continually begged him to turn back and that she wasn't liking this side of him. Soon he does and the next day Bernard told her he was sad that they didn't wait to sleep together tip they were adults. She was soon talking to her friend about there date and was asked if she still liked him. Lenina says yes but only said and talked about his physical features really.

Part 2
Bernard goes to the directors office to get a permit on being allowed to go to the preservation. The director soon tell Bernard that he recalls bringing a girl to this preservation at one time. He recalled that everything was perfect until his girl disappeared. Bernard tried to comfort him by saying that it mustve been terrible but instead he director shows great relief. The director then confronts bernard about not liking the reports he's getting from him about his thinking. How ever Bernard takes these threats excitingly and is glad that he has some importance. After wards he ends up talking to Helmholtz who was agitated about Bernards bragging.

Part 3
Lenina and Bernard are now in the reservation and she would much rather stay at a hotel that has tv, and hot water. They are approached by the warden who then gives them a speech about this preservation. While Lenina sat down surprised or motionless like she was high, Bernard received a call from Hemholtz saying that he is being moved to Iceland. when the conversation ends the warden tells him that they need to stay at the reservation.
Each chapter shows more about an actual distance that Bernard and Lenina have. It also shows a small conflict that the director, Helmhotz, and Beranrd are having.

Brave New World ch 2 notes

Summary
In this chapter the tour continues and the group is taken to the nursery. Here we see babies being trained not to be distracted with books or flowers. They do this because the community doesn't want them to be distracted with those things. They achieve this through electro shock training which they are "trained" 200 times not to touch them. On the other hand, they are showing them hatred for flowers because they believed they should try to increase consumption of goods. Instead of a love for nature which just increased transportation. Soon the director tells the kids of a story about how a polish kid learned a new language by accident from just listening to a broadcast. Lastly the students see the nurses tell the babies what they must do while there sleeping or give there class special orders.

This chapter still goes on describing the details in human production while explaining further about the dystopia these people live in.

Possibility of Evil and Lottery comparison.

When looking at the two stories The Possibility of Evil and The Lottery a common theme could be What appears good at first is in reality evil/bad in both stories. The characters Ms. Strangeworth  and the community members appear to be good and righteous, but in the end they are actually the real problem. In the story The Possibility of Evil Ms. Strangeworth writes letters that send warnings or messages to the towns people because she thinks that her last name Strangeworth gives her the right  to run everyone's lives and tell them what they can and can't do. While in The Lottery a whole community kills one person in a twisted game of chance were the winner dies; so the town's people does not need to deal with over population.  Both stories focus on if the hero is doing the right thing.

Thursday/ Fridays work. The Possibility of Evil

Thursday/Friday Class Work:

Objective: Text analysis - students will be able to explain the motivation between the protagonist's actions after reading the story, "The Possibility of Evil" and relate it to a theme.

Students need to write a blog entry of an least 1 paragraph explaining the protagonists motivations for her action in “The Possibility of Evil”.  Students need to cite at least three pieces of evidence to support their analysis.
Mrs. Strange worth wanted to as she said in her own words stop the possibility of evil starting. Theres probably a bigger meaning to why she does. Maybe she thinks of herself as a mayor or officer since she goes on about saying that her family built this town. So if there was a problem she wanted to be the one to fix it so it didn't affect any thing in the town. She's probably more concerned for the town then the peoples well fare in a sense. She worries more about her roses then the fact she broke the hearts of two lovers. In a sense I don't think she quite cares for he peoples hearts as more of her just keeping peace no matter the cost.

Students also need to write a 2-3 paragraph sequel to show how Miss Strangeworth’s life is different after her secret is revealed.
Tearful at the site of all her roses being shredded and stomped on Miss Strange worth walked sluggishly back in side devastated by the look of what was once her beautiful garden. As she sat in her quiet dining room sipping tea all she could think of is how this could've happened to her. She sat there for good hour soon not realizing that her tea glass was empty, and all she was sipping was air. As she laid down in bed having pleasant dreams of her life before it turned into nightmares of the town chasing her back to her home all shouting and holding weapons.

The next morning she got up eyes purple from her having lack of sleep. Miss Strange worth took her morning routine and was about ready to step out the door. As she opened it there was a crunch noise. Looking down she was greeted with the sight of more roses ripped apart. Taking a few steps back she shook off the horror that was befallen upon her and soon was walking in the streets of town. As she greeted people all she got was ether grunts or silence. When Miss Strange worth was getting her normal groceries Mr. Lewis stopped her and was going to refuse service Stating she wasn't allowed in his store. Saddened she walked out and was confused on where to go.
After being denied service at every store Miss Strange worth soon went home. As she entered her yard she tripped over a hose that was right behind the gate.Miss Strange worth was dying after falling hard on the ground, Not only was it a heavy hit but she landed on a big pile of roses which had thorns spread across the whole pile of petals. the thorns were sharp enough that some punctured her skin and made her bleed out in multiple areas. Slowly she laid there only able to shed few tears as she soon starts to realize  how the town discovering her led to this. Using the last of her energy she took the nearest in tact rose and held it close to her chest.

Both of these pieces of writing should be posted on the blog.

Ring Ring, Time to get up everybody, its seven o clock and its time to get up. Sluggishly Mr. and Mrs Featherstone rose from there covers slowly making there way to the bathroom to get cleaned up. The showers started as soon as they entered the bathroom the water was already warm and the sink, started ready for teeth to be cleaned and faces to be shaved. Breakfast was already served and the children were sipping there milk before the parents got downstairs.
"Happy birthday daddy!" the children shouted as there father sat down to enjoy his toast and read the prepped news paper. After breakfast Mr. featherstone went to off to his job while the wife got the kids ready and drove them to school. When she got back the kitchen was spotless as usual and the garden was waiting for her. She soon started to pick flowers for an hour before she went inside to relax. while inside she would start to make her husband a birthday cake, with the kitchen system helping of course.
Five more hours would past and the kids would soon be back from school.Mr. featherstone would be driving back from his tiring long day of work. It was friday though so he and some of his buddies from work would be playing poker tonight. When he got home he sat out side sipping his drink relaxing on the patio chair with his wife watching the children pass a ball back and fourth and chasing there big dog around. It was soon bath time for the children so they went up to get ready and see which story or adventure there room had in store for them. While the kids were preparing for bed poker time was approaching Mr. Featherstone quickly so he prepared the usual scotch for the boys while the house took care of the table and cards. Mrs featherstone would be serving sandwiches and singing happy birthday to her husband before she retired to there room ready to fall asleep to one of her poems the house would read her.
When poker was done Mr. Featherstone would warily walk up the stairs to his bedroom get changed and fall asleep next to his wife ready for tomorrow, while the house soon shut down locking the doors and waiting till the next morning when the same thing would happen again.
