Brave new world ch 8

Allusions
Bye Bye baby banting poem- its sang to John when he was younger
When he is drunk asleep, or in his rage quote- Hamlet

Summary
After a teary reunion Linda and John soon talk about how he was raised here. He describes not being able to read and Linda being a terrible mother. Every day they were visited by a masque man called Pope and John soon hated him more and more but wasn't capable of saying or showing it. Every time he visited it was to make Linda pass out from a drink that tasted terrible but had the same effects as Soma. After a few more years John came how to find three native women whipping and beating Linda for sleeping with there husbands. John pleaded them to stop, but was whipped as well. a few more months past and one day John was given a book to read, despite the fact that its based on her job and has really big words. he still learned to read them on his own. Soon he was able to read them though and a few years later he started reading an old shakespeare book. After the story Bernard soon started a plan and decided to bring John with him to the city.

Possible meaning
Despite John seeing his mother being defiled by Pope, the man he hated for a while. He didn't have the strength or the words to express his anger towards Pope. This references a connection to Hamlet. I think Hamlet/John didn't or couldn't end the life of Pope/the uncle because he at first didn't have words or the will to do it almost like he was denying that Pope wouldn't do sin to his mom. When seeing his night mare first hand he like Hamlet, went crazy and attacked him. But, he couldn't end Pope's life because he soon thought of him as a family member he loved to hate. In the end Pope helped John, when he taught him how to make clay art and wield a bow. This occurred when Pope saw John act more like a man.
It also looks relatable because while pope came for more than to give out masque, John didn't really lose it until he saw what he feared first hand. Like how Hamlet went insane as he heard that his uncle killed his father and soon married (relationship) his mother.
In my personal opinion, Lenina will become a problem later on in the story. Lenina is never going to change because of the way she and her caste are brain wash to have open relationships with any guy interested in them. However, John and Bernard have different views on life and love her so much that they may kill each other over her.
